Wine information
More than almost any other Spanish bodega, Artadi stands for the change from wines characterised by the cellar to wines characterised by the terroir. Since the 1990s, the winery in the Basque region of Rioja has focussed on expressing the character of specific vineyards in its wines. The certified organic red wine "La Hoya" comes from a 3.3 hectare east-facing vineyard in the municipality of Elvillar. We are here in the higher and cooler part of the Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The 58-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on deep, loamy soils. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. The wine is matured in oak barrels of different sizes and ages.

Nose
La Hoya 2021 has a compact and, despite its youth, already expressive nose with aromas of blackberries, vanilla and pepper. Mediterranean herbs and floral hints are also present. Overall, the bouquet is very clean, balanced and wonderfully fresh, even sensual.
Palate
The attack is juicy and aromatic, and it is astonishing how lean and agile this wine appears despite its concentration and intensity. The fine-grained, densely woven tannins and silky, velvety texture create an elegant mouthfeel. There is also an earthy minerality that lends the wine an impressive complexity. The juicy finish is long and persistent. Overall, this red wine is characterised by freshness, density and a great drinking flow.
