Wine Description for Tokaji Furmint Sec 2021 by Királyudvar
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with silvery reflections – clear, brilliant and brimming with youthful freshness.
- Nose
- The nose is captivating and multi-layered: honeydew melon and fresh grape open the play, followed by lively citrus fruit and delicate floral aromas. A hint of Montélimar nougat lends the whole an enticing, almost Mediterranean warmth. Beneath this runs a fine, almost saline minerality – precise and invigorating, like a breeze across volcanic stone.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine shows tautness and vibrancy. The lively acidity is the backbone of this wine – it animates, awakens the appetite and gives the wine an almost electrifying tension. Notes of apple and citrus peel accompany the sip, complemented by a subtle bitterness that signals complexity and depth. Not a gram of excess – this wine is athletic and precise.
- Finish
- Long, fresh and mineral. The finish closes with fine bitterness and a lingering citrus echo – a wine that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes hail from six renowned vineyard sites in the Tokaj Mountains: Percze, Henye, Lapsis, Suba, Betsek and Nyulászo. The volcanic rhyolite stone of these sites shapes the wine’s characteristic minerality and tension in an unmistakable way.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A cuvée of 88% Furmint and 12% Hárslevelű – Tokaj’s classic partnership. The harvest took place in September 2021, with maturation lasting eight months in Hungarian oak barrels (5 hl and 16 hl), which gives the wine structure without overwhelming its fruitiness. Bottled in July 2022.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Ideal with grilled pike-perch or trout with herb butter, equally a brilliant companion to Asian cuisine, goat’s cheese or a classic Wiener Schnitzel. The lively acidity makes it the perfect aperitif.
- Special Features
- Királyudvar counts among the pioneers of the dry Furmint style in Tokaj and has played a decisive role in establishing the region internationally beyond sweet Aszú wines. This Sec demonstrates impressively what potential Furmint possesses as a dry white wine.
