Wine Description for Tokaji Esszencia 2001 500ml by Királyudvar
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, saturated amber – the colour of liquid millennium. In the glass, the Esszencia draws its trails slowly and gravitationally, like liquid gold aware of its own significance.
- Nose
- A kaleidoscope of the senses. The first impression belongs to fine spice notes – white pepper, a hint of light Virginia tobacco – before the unmistakable signature of Botrytis breaks through: quince bread, peach paste, dripping honeycomb. Then, from the depths, something enigmatic: subtle carbolic notes reminiscent of a fine Islay whisky, an old leather armchair, a pot of beeswax polish, a bowl of raisins. A still life in aromas – multifaceted, complex, inexhaustible.
- Palate
- Despite an incredible 464 grams of residual sugar, the Esszencia on the palate is remarkably precise and never cumbersome. The texture is viscous and oily, the density enormous – and yet a lively, refined acidity nerve holds everything in perfect balance. Darjeeling tea, orange oil and candied orange peel dominate the mid-palate. A firework of aromas that unfolds in waves whilst never losing control.
- Finish
- Ambrosial, seemingly endless aftertaste. This wine does not leave the palate – it retreats like a tidal ebb that sets in again and again. Perspective: at least 50 more years of development potential.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Made from Furmint and Hárslevelű – the classic grape varieties of Tokaj – sourced exclusively from botrytised berries, whose juice flows naturally from the dried grapes. With merely 4.0% alcohol, this Esszencia is less wine than liquid concentration – a distillate of time and place.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Most honestly enjoyed as a meditation in the glass, on its own. For those who wish to dine: aged Roquefort strikes the salty counterpoint logic perfectly. Equally seared foie gras or – for the adventurous – fresh venison liver on mugwort brioche, whose earthy intensity stands up to the depth of this wine.
- Special Characteristics
- Tokaji Esszencia is not wine in the conventional sense – it is a natural wonder in a bottle that for centuries was regarded as a remedy for kings. The vintage 2001 from the house of Királyudvar – one of the most renowned estates of Tokaj-Hegyalja – ranks among the great Esszenciás of the modern era. A wine for eternity, in the half bottle.
