Wine Description for Kaiserstuhl 2023 by Franz Keller

Colour & Appearance
Slightly hazy golden yellow with green reflections – an authentic, unadorned wine that makes no secret of its natural origins.
Nose
Expressive and multi-layered: citrus fruits and ripe apricots meet the characteristic note of freshly stirred yeast. Beneath lie aromas of light nuts and almonds, underpinned by a distinct herbal spice and cool minerality that recalls the loess soils of Kaiserstuhl.
Palate
Creamy and juicy, this 2023 presents itself with impressive smoothness and texture – you can practically chew it. The spice is present without dominating, whilst a lively acidity and a saline edge provide tension and stimulate the palate. A wine with substance and drinkability in equal measure.
Finish
Persistent and fresh with a lovely balance between fruity fullness and mineral precision. The saline note lingers and leaves you wanting more.
Terroir & Origin
From Kaiserstuhl in Baden, one of Germany’s warmest wine regions. The grapes come from loess soils – lighter, mineral-rich soils that give the wine its characteristic freshness and spice.
Grape Variety & Vinification
An exciting cuvée of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and the fungus-resistant variety Souvignier Gris. Aged in amphora and wooden barrel, bottled unfiltered and without added sulphites – an uncompromising natural approach that demands both courage and skill.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile food companion: perfect with pan-fried sea fish, scallops, risotto or creamy mushroom dishes. Also an excellent choice with poultry in cream sauce or mature Comté.
Special Features
Franz Keller’s natural approach shines through in this unconventional, characterful wine. The combination of traditional ageing and modern grape variety selection (Souvignier Gris as a PIWI variety) makes it a forward-thinking statement for sustainable viticulture at Kaiserstuhl.
