Wine Description for Copains IGP Méditerranée 2023 by Roche-Audran

Colour & Appearance

A seductively transparent purple in the glass – youthful, vibrant and inviting. The clarity already reveals Vincent Rochette’s unvarnished, authentic approach.

Nose

Here unfolds a Mediterranean aromatic spectrum that whets the appetite: violet flowers and garrigue meet juicy blackberries, sweet and sour cherries. What makes this Vin de Soif particularly special is the successful tension between southern warmth and cool, stony notes with a hint of rapeseed aromatics. This duality – sun-kissed and yet earthy-mineral – makes the wine complex and thirst-quenching even on the bouquet.

Palate

On the palate, the aromatic expressiveness continues: violet notes, fresh pomegranate juice, cherries and redcurrants dance across the tongue. Juiciness takes centre stage, supported by vibrant freshness and a pleasantly grippy, almost chalky texture. Ageing in cement tank preserves fruit clarity and lends the wine an unadorned directness. With just 13% alcohol, it remains light-footed and elegant – a wine that doesn’t tire, but invites the next sip.

General Information

The Copains is the evolution of Rochette’s earlier Merlot and now combines 40% Grenache, 30% Merlot and 30% Syrah. The vines are rooted in the hills of Rasteau and Cairanne at 180-250 metres altitude, with north-easterly to north-westerly exposure – ideal for freshness and elegance. Soils of clay, sand and marine pebbles lend the wine its mineral character. Spontaneous fermentation and ageing in concrete underline the natural approach.

Food Pairing Suggestions

An uncomplicated companion for convivial moments: perfect with grilled vegetables, ratatouille, grilled lamb chops or Provençal herb dishes. Also an excellent choice with charcuterie, tapenade and Mediterranean antipasti. Lightly chilled to 14-16°C, it unfolds its full potential as a summer terrace wine.

Special Features

The name says it all: Copains means mates, friends – and that’s exactly what this wine is made for. An authentic, unpretentious southern French wine that puts drinking pleasure above score-chasing.
