Info
Calafata is not just a winery. In terms of wine, it should rather be called a cooperative. It is a social project and a catch basin for the socially disadvantaged or marginalized. Thus, one can also expect political statements here. On the back label as well as on the cork you can find "make wine not war" and "in ground we trust". Clear statements. Besides wine, they are also dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables and olives.
The Figlioduncane is a strictly limited Cabernet Sauvignon, which is only produced in the best vintages and exclusively filled in magnum bottles. In 2018, there were only 256 bottles. It comes from a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the higher altitudes of Maolina. The berries are pressed with the feet and later fermented on the mash in a large fermentation vat. The wine is aged for two years in used barrique barrels.

Dark purple, slight cloudiness, violet reflections
Nose
The nose immediately conveys an earthy and acidic-fruity character. Forest floor, pine cones and undergrowth also provide plenty of ethereal moments. A little cedar and cigar box counter this. Hazelnuts and almonds provide another sensory layer. Sour cherry, mulberry as well as plum and blackberry contribute dark fruit nuances. In the background, juniper, black pepper, cubeb pepper but also rosemary and sage can be detected. In a mysterious way, 2018 Figlioduncane conveys both rustic and elegant moments.
Palate
On the palate, it seems cool and juicy at the same time. Fortunately, the dark fruit is accompanied by a very well-balanced acid structure. The tannin is pleasantly small-pored and almost meltingly integrated. On the palate, too, it combines rustic as well as elegant attributes very well. The Sangiovese lives from a racy acidity, which it combines with plenty of fruit and spice. The tannin forms its backbone and provides tension. The balsamic and ethereal notes clearly come to the fore in the finish. The fruit now takes a back seat.
