Wine Description for Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2020 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Dark, dense cherry red with delicate violet reflections – a Barolo that reveals its concentration and depth at first glance.
- Nose
- Mosconi presents itself as a dark, spice-driven representative of its vineyard site. Juniper, black pepper and clove meld with fresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage. Beneath these lie roasted coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of black truffle on damp forest floor. Sweet cherries, blackberry and elderberry hold themselves elegantly in the background – a perfect balance between spice and fruit.
- Palate
- This Barolo unfolds on the palate with pressure and power. The fine-grained tannin is present but never dominant – it creates space for an impressive mineral structure. The vibrant acidity keeps the fruit in check and ensures a remarkable drinking flow. Spicy notes repeatedly come to the fore and challenge the fruit. An elegant, minute-long interplay of aromas of great length.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and carried by fine minerality. The dark spices and the acidity structure linger for minutes.
- Terroir & Origin
- The MGA Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba is among the oldest and most renowned vineyard sites. Chiara Boschis manages 1.9 hectares here at 370 metres altitude with complete southern exposure. The 2020 vintage was characterised by an early start, June thunderstorms and cool September nights – ideal conditions for slow, aromatic ripening with 30-40% reduced yields.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, vinified in stainless steel tank with frequent remontage and pigeage. Maturation in French barriques with light toasting and 30% new oak, followed by one year in bottle. The methodology remains deliberately restrained to let the terroir speak. Harvest on 2nd October 2020.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Braised ox cheeks with creamy polenta and mostarda, tagliatelle with veal ragù and olives or surprisingly also salt-baked beetroot with raspberry vinaigrette and capers.
- Special Features
- A dark, spice-driven Barolo of extraordinary elegance. Chiara Boschis‘ Mosconi combines power with finesse and impressively demonstrates how terroir triumphs over winemaking technique. Limited production: 9,826 bottles and 278 magnums.
