Wine Description for Barbaresco DOCG Roncaglie Masseria 2019 by Vietti

Character
Vietti is among the traditional houses of Piedmont, which for generations have understood the art of drawing the best from individual vineyard sites. The Barbaresco from the Roncaglie cru in the Masseria locality represents that classic style which places elegance before power. The 2019 vintage brought optimal conditions to Piedmont – a warm, dry summer with cool nights that produced concentrated yet balanced wines. Here Nebbiolo reveals itself in its full aromatic complexity and structural finesse.
Terroir & Origin
Roncaglie lies in the municipality of Barbaresco on calcareous marl soils, which impart to Nebbiolo that mineral tension and freshness for which this DOCG is renowned. The south-west facing aspect of the vineyard site ensures optimal sun exposure, whilst the altitude provides the necessary coolness. The terroir of Barbaresco differs subtly from that in Barolo – the wines often show themselves more accessible, perfumed and with silky texture, without sacrificing structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of the great grape varieties of the world, demanding in cultivation and uncompromising in its expression. Vietti cultivates a style that combines tradition with modern understanding – lengthy maceration periods for structure, ageing in large wooden casks for maturity without excessive oak notes. At 14% alcohol, the wine shows itself powerful, yet not overwrought. The typical characteristics of the variety – tannins of noble austerity, vibrant acidity, aromas of rose, tar and red fruits – come fully into their own here.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A Barbaresco of this calibre calls for Piedmontese cuisine: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with truffle, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano. The wine also shows its strength with braised game birds, duck breast or mushroom dishes featuring porcini. The structure of Nebbiolo harmonises superbly with rich, aromatic meat dishes that engage its tannins.
