Wine Description for Tiglat 2020 by Velich
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale golden yellow in the glass, luminous and clear – a visual promise of elegance and finesse.
- Nose
- The 2020 Tiglat presents itself even finer and clearer than its predecessors. Rather than lush yellow fruit, white flowers, lemon oil and salt lemons now dominate, accompanied by delicate limequat notes. A fine reductivity lends the wine tension without being intrusive. Added to this are smoke, chalk, a hint of iodine and subtle suggestions of finest pastry – the hallmark of two years‘ wood ageing that has integrated perfectly.
- Palate
- On the palate, a fascinating tension unfolds: vibrant and powerful, yet simultaneously silky and creamy. The texture is remarkable – densely coating, almost oily in its fullness. A kaleidoscope of yellow, green and orange fruit merges with saline minerality and piquant zests. Pear and lemon cream meet fine spice and a subtle extract sweetness that lends the wine depth without heaviness.
- Finish
- Long, intense, persistent – the Tiglat refuses to end. The aromatics linger on the palate for minutes and fade only slowly in a blend of minerality, citrus freshness and fine wood spice.
- Terroir & Origin
- From a parcel planted in 1959 in the Seewinkel on Lake Neusiedl, originally planted for Weißburgunder. The vineyard site brings that minerality and tension which makes this Chardonnay so unmistakable.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Chardonnay, hand-harvested at full ripeness. Whole bunch pressing after settling, spontaneous fermentation at higher temperatures, followed by 24 months‘ ageing on full lees in wood – a patient, traditional approach that lends the wine its complexity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Chicken Makhani, Vol-au-Vent of freshwater fish, surprisingly also Steak Béarnaise – the Tiglat has the structure and power to stand up to more robust dishes.
- Special Features
- One of the first great Austrian Chardonnays with international renown, created by the Velich brothers since the 1990s. The style has evolved from powerful to elegant – the 2020 marks a pinnacle of this development.
