Colour & Appearance

Radiant, deep golden yellow with vibrant luminosity in the glass – a first indication of the substance and depth of this wine.

Nose

The nose is complex and unmistakably marked by Burgundian elegance. Fresh notes of citrus and delicate peach meet a pronounced, almost saline minerality – sea breeze, flint, a hint of struck match. Fine aromas of white bread crust and youthful yeast notes add a doughy spice to the wine. Sage and mint round out the picture with refreshing vibrancy.

Palate

On the palate, the Tiglat unfolds a remarkable tension between juiciness and precise grip. The pronounced salinity runs through the wine like a thread and lends it an almost meditative focus. A fine, barely perceptible tannin structures the palate and gives the wine definition – rare in Chardonnay, here a genuine quality hallmark.

Finish

Long, precise and sustained by persistent minerality. The finish is clear and lively, without any heaviness – despite 14.0% alcohol, the wine displays remarkable balance and freshness.

Terroir & Origin

The Tiglat comes from a single vineyard site that was already planted in 1959 – old vines that lend the wine depth and concentration. The name is an old dialect expression for a small section of the vineyard, somewhere in Burgenland on the shores of Lake Neusiedl, where the Pannonian climate meets mineral-rich soils.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Pure Chardonnay, vinified with the ambition to let the origin speak for itself. The ageing emphasises precision over opulence – not a rich, buttery New World style, but a wine that in its structure and minerality recalls the great white Burgundies.

Food Pairing Recommendations

Ideal with grilled turbot with caper butter, scallops on pea purée or a lobster risotto. It also reveals its full potential with more intense dishes featuring savoury aromas – such as calf sweetbreads with citrus gremolata or pasta with black truffle.

The Tiglat is the wine that put the Velich winery on the international map. Already magnificent to drink in its youth, the 2021 has the potential to become even more concentrated and gain in complexity over the coming five to ten years.
