Trebbiano
Also known as: Ugni Blanc (France), Procanico (Umbria), Trebbiano Toscano, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo
Trebbiano is Italy’s most widely planted white grape variety and – as Ugni Blanc – France’s too. A global career that rarely receives recognition. The variety provides the base wine for Cognac and Armagnac, vinegar for Balsamic, and in Italy often enough neutral blending wine. It has thoroughly earned the label „characterless“. Yet those who dismiss Trebbiano overlook what dedicated winemakers extract from the grape: fresh acidity, floral notes, an almost saline minerality.
In Abruzzo, Cirelli demonstrates what organic cultivation and spontaneous fermentation give to Trebbiano – living wines with substance. Cinque Campi in Emilia-Romagna interprets the variety with refermentation in the bottle. In Tuscany, Tenuta di Carleone and Corzano e Paterno work with old vines and show that Trebbiano can have depth.
