Wine Description for Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC Amphora 2023 by Cirelli

Character
Francesco Cirelli belongs to those uncompromising winemakers of the Abruzzi who restore true dignity to the often underestimated Trebbiano grape. The amphora ageing imparts this wine an archaic texture and mineral depth that far transcends the conventional, often insipid Trebbiano interpretations. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol, it embodies drinkability and elegance rather than opulence – a wine that invites contemplation, not to impress.
Terroir & Origin
The Abruzzi, wedged between the Adriatic and the Apennines, offers a harsh, continental climate with cool nights and warm days. Cirelli’s vineyards benefit from calcareous soils and proximity to the sea, which provide freshness and salinity. This region, long overshadowed by Tuscan prominence, is developing into a hotspot for naturally-minded winemakers who combine ancient traditions with modern ecological consciousness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Trebbiano d’Abruzzo – not to be confused with the paler Trebbiano Toscano – is a distinctive variety with potential for structure and longevity. The amphora ageing in terracotta vessels means spontaneous fermentation, skin contact and micro-oxidative maturation without oak influence. The result: phenolic tension, grip and a slightly oxidative note reminiscent of dried herbs and nuts. Cirelli works biodynamically and eschews oenological tricks – what lands in the glass is pure grape and terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine demands rustic cuisine: roasted monkfish, spaghetti alle vongole or grilled squid with lemon. The texture harmonises beautifully with Pecorino cheese, fried artichokes or arrosticini, the typical lamb skewers of the Abruzzi. It also shows surprising affinity with oriental dishes featuring sesame and fermented notes.
