Wine Description for Sgarzon Cilindrica Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2018 by Foradori
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, slightly transparent purplish-red – a colour that already hints at what awaits in the glass: depth without heaviness, substance without opulence.
- Nose
- The Sgarzon Cilindrica is the cooler, leaner sibling in the Foradori cosmos. Delicate notes of mallow and sour cherries, along with sloe, redcurrants and a whisper of burnt earth. Tobacco and dried herbs lend the nose an almost meditative stillness – complex, yet never loud.
- Palate
- On the palate, a Teroldego of striking precision reveals itself: cool, juicy and sinewy, with a texture reminiscent of fine-grained sandpaper – barely perceptible, and yet shaping. Vibrant acidity carries the fruit, a subtly tobacco-tinged spice adds depth, and the interplay between freshness and ripe, acid-driven fruit creates a rare tension between intellect and emotion.
- Finish
- Long, elegant and characterised by persistent mineral freshness. The wine bids farewell quietly, yet unforgettably.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Sgarzon – Trentino dialect for vine tendril – lies in the Campo Rotaliano near Mezzolombardo on 2.5 hectares of alluvial silt. Sandy topsoil and lack of windbreak result in a week longer ripening period than in the neighbouring Morei vineyard – the result is a cooler, wilder character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Teroldego, aged for eight months on the skins in Spanish Tinajas (420 litres), followed by harmonisation in concrete tanks. One third of the vintage matured for a further year in Cilindricas – cylindrical 330-litre amphorae – without skins. The Sgarzon Cilindrica is thus the Riserva among Foradori’s amphora wines: more structured, finer, more concentrated.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with hazelnut tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and balsamic cherries, with suckling pig cheeks braised in liquorice with beetroot and parsley root purée or with red cabbage roulades with lamb forcemeat, walnuts and thyme.
- Special Features
- Elisabetta Foradori is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of amphora ageing in Italy. The Sgarzon Cilindrica is a prime example of how Teroldego – often underestimated – can become a wine of international standing: distinctive, precise and of unmistakable alpine character.
