Wine Description for Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023 by Col d’Orcia
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, semi-transparent ruby red – classic and inviting, with a clarity that immediately promises elegance.
- Nose
- The nose is of striking finesse: blackcurrant and wild strawberry meet juicy sour cherry and a hint of sweet cherry. Floral notes of violet and dried roses join in, underpinned by discreet cedar, orange peel and a whisper of vanilla. A Sangiovese that impresses with complexity, yet never overwhelms.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine unfolds elegantly and in balance – juicy, fresh and with a pleasant textural grip. Cherry, berries and plum carry the fruit profile, framed by the characteristic, crisp Sangiovese acidity and well-integrated, supple tannins. Not a gram of excess – precision rules here.
- Finish
- Long, fresh and of intense persistence. The finish resonates with red fruit and vibrant acidity – a long, harmonious finale that makes you reach for the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes grow in south-facing vineyard sites of Col d’Orcia in Montalcino, at around 250 metres altitude overlooking the Orcia river valley. The cool, rainy spring of 2023 demanded precise vineyard work, but rewarded with a vintage of fine aromatic depth. July through September unfolded evenly – without heat stress, with perfect physiological ripeness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Sangiovese, fermented on the skins for 10–12 days at controlled temperature below 26 °C in specially crafted, shallow 150-hectolitre steel tanks. Maturation for 10–12 months in Slavonian oak casks (75 and 150 hl) as well as partly in concrete tanks – an ageing regimen that protects both fruit and structure. Followed by bottle maturation.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar salami or Pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale. Equally convincing with aged Pecorino or a rustic Ribollita.
- Special Characteristics
- The 2023 is a textbook Rosso di Montalcino – no heavy, alcohol-driven colossus, but a wine that impresses with aromatic complexity and drinkability. Immediately accessible and yet with the potential to age for several more years. A convincing ambassador for Col d’Orcia’s style.
