Wine Description for Il Frappato IGT Sicilia 2023 1500ml Magnum by Occhipinti

Character
Arianna Occhipinti is one of the most influential voices of a new generation of Sicilian winemakers – and her Il Frappato is perhaps her most personal statement. Not a wine that seeks to impress, but one that tells a story: of a place, a philosophy, a deep conviction that great wine comes from the soil and not from the cellar. With merely 12.5% alcohol, this Frappato is a counterpoint to the lush Sicilian cliché – light-footed, vibrant, with irresistible drinkability. The magnum bottle (1.5 litres) does its part: it protects the wine, allows it to mature more slowly, and makes it the ideal companion for convivial gatherings.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come from south-eastern Sicily, from the area around Vittoria – one of the few wine regions on the island that benefits from a certain cool sea breeze of the Mediterranean. Occhipinti’s vineyards are managed biodynamically, the soils are sandy and volcanic in character. This combination of heat, wind and nutrient-poor soils gives the Frappato its characteristic tension between Mediterranean warmth and fresh vibrancy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Frappato is an indigenous Sicilian grape variety that long stood in the shadow of the more robust Nero d’Avola – until winemakers like Occhipinti restored it to new prominence. The variety naturally brings pale colours, fine structure and floral-spicy aromatics. Occhipinti favours minimal intervention in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, gentle maturation, no over-shaping through oak. The wine should let the grape and the place speak – not the winemaker.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Frappato is a versatile table companion with the heart of a country wine and the soul of a character wine. It harmonises beautifully with grilled vegetables, Pasta alla Norma, Arancini or light grilled meat dishes. It also finds its place effortlessly with Sicilian antipasti, Caponata or mild sheep’s cheese variations. Served lightly chilled, it unfolds its full freshness.
