Wine description for Meursault “Sous la Velle” AOC 2023 by Pierre-Henri Rougeot
- Character
- A profound white wine driven by mineral tension, mastering the balance between classic Burgundian texture and modern freshness. Pierre-Henri Rougeot largely dispenses with sulphur interventions, lending the 2023 vintage remarkable transparency and pure aromatics. Neither overladen nor flabby, this Meursault presents itself focused, elegant and with subtle grip on the palate.
- Terroir & Origin
- The “Sous la Velle” vineyard site lies at the foot of the slope below the village centre of Meursault in the Côte de Beaune (France). The soil is characterised by deeper limestone-marl layers topped with fine clay. This interplay guaranteed excellent water supply during the warm 2023 vintage and confers upon the wine its typical cool texture alongside a sublime sense of place.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Single-varietal Chardonnay, crafted naturally and artisanally. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in used French oak barrels to keep the wood subtly in the background. Rougeot’s minimalism in the cellar expresses the grape variety unvarnished: no fining, no filtration and a noticeably energetic acid structure at a balanced 13.5% ABV.
- Food Pairings
- Thanks to its aristocratic structure, this Meursault pairs brilliantly with pan-roasted turbot in miso butter, Bresse chicken with morels or a classic veal chop in a cream sauce. It also displays its full class alongside mature Comté.
