The Vignaverde is Marco de Bartoli's entry-level Grillo. The grapes for it are grown in the Contrada Samperi near Marsala, planted in 1996, not far from the sea in a depression below sea level. They are harvested early by hand, often starting as early as the third week of August for the Vignaverde. The fermentation of the pressed juice is spontaneous with wild yeasts in steel tanks, where the wine lays on its fine lees for six months before bottling, with minimal sulphur.
Color
Pale straw yellow with a silver tapered rim.
Nose
The 2022 Vignaverde from Marco de Bartoli is the entry-level Grillo into de Bartoli's multi-faceted world of this exciting grape variety. Youthfully fresh on the nose, it is reminiscent of freshly mown grass, hay flowers and crunchy pome fruits such as Granny Smith and conference pears. A little yeast plait from the ageing, lemon zest as well as its distinctive saline note make the wheel go round.
Mouth
Juicy and plump with ripe fruit in a fine phenolic thread, the Vignaverde shuffles across the palate. The brilliant fruit is framed by animatingly tart tannin, which lines its contours like brocade. Mineral with a crumbly texture and a delicately salty finish, it is reminiscent of orange blossom, yellow fruit and bay leaf. Distinctive wine with a stark character of origin.
