Wine description for Quarantasarme Perricone IGT Terre Siciliane 2022 by Vino Lauria
- Colour & appearance
- Purple-red with violet reflections, dense and youthfully vibrant in the glass.
- Nose
- Dark-fruited and powerful: mulberries and blackberries, herbally counterpointed by wild lingonberries and elderberry. Spicy notes of sandalwood, liquorice, cardamom and pimento lend the aromatics an almost oriental depth.
- Palate
- Dense, fleshy, concentrated. The rich fruit recalls wine gums, cassis and cranberry – more like pure juice than nectar. Ripe, fine-grained tannins give the wine a firm, almost chewy texture; solid bass, dark red fruit, plenty of substance.
- Finish
- Aromatically herbal and purple-hued, with persistent dark berry fruit and a spicy aftertaste.
- Terroir & origin
- The grapes come from the hill country between Alcamo and Camporeale, around 65 kilometres south-west of Palermo. Here, at altitudes between 600 and 1,000 metres, cool nights and the breeze from the Tyrrhenian Sea ensure exciting ripening progressions. Vito Lauria observes the old Perricone vineyards year after year – only when he finds a site with perfect ripeness is this wine made.
- Grape variety & vinification
- Perricone, an autochthonous Sicilian rarity, from old vines, harvested from mid-October onwards. After 24 hours of cryo-maceration, fermentation follows for 15 days at a cool 15 degrees; maturation takes place for twelve months in large, untoasted oak casks – the wood deliberately takes a back seat to the fruit.
- Food recommendations
- A wine for hearty cuisine: lamb stew with black olives, Pasta alla Norma, roast wild boar or roasted aubergines with harissa. Also a convincing choice with mature Pecorino.
- Special features
- The rarest wine in the Vino Lauria portfolio. Its name – Sicilian for “forty arms” – refers to an old unit of measurement and the extensive area of origin. Not a wine for every year: it is only produced when the old Perricone vines reach ideal ripeness. The result is a red of rare density and expressive, almost oriental spice – Sicily’s rugged beauty captured in the glass.
