The 2019 vintage in the Ribera del Duero benefited from a balanced vegetation cycle with cool nights and warm days - ideal conditions for physiological ripeness while maintaining freshness. At 14.5% alcohol, this wine is within the typical range for the region without tipping over into overload.

Terroir and origin

The Ribera del Duero, situated at an altitude of around 800 metres, is Tempranillo country par excellence. Here, between Valladolid and Aranda de Duero, a continental climate with extreme temperature fluctuations and barren limestone soils characterise the wines. Valdemonjas works in this demanding landscape with old vines that grow deep roots and produce concentrated, mineral-rich grapes.

Tempranillo - often called Tinto Fino or Tinta del País in the region - finds perhaps its most expressive home here. The variety combines dark fruit with earthy notes, a firm tannin structure and the tension that promises great ageing potential.

Food pairing suggestions

A wine of this character calls for savoury cuisine: Shoulder of lamb from the oven, Castilian black pudding, mature Manchego or a hearty beef steak. The structure of the Tempranillo harmonises with roasted aromas and the umami of grilled meat. This Ribera also shows its best side with braised game ragú or mushroom dishes with pimentón - down-to-earth, honest and substantial.
