Wine description for Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese VDP Grosse Lage 2022 from Karthäuserhof
Character
The Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese 2022 embodies the quintessence of the Mosel Riesling tradition - a balance between expressive fruit and mineral precision. With its moderate residual sweetness and restrained alcohol content of just 7.5% vol., it represents the classic Spätlese style, which is characterised by finesse rather than opulence. The Karthäuserhofberg vineyard, with its slate soils and special microclimate, gives the wine the subtle tension between sweetness and acidity that characterises great Mosel Rieslings.
Terroir and tradition
Karthäuserhofone of the oldest wine estates in Germany, has been cultivating its vineyards since 1335. The VDP-classified Karthäuserhofberg vineyard is one of the jewels of the Ruwer, a side valley of the Moselle. Here, the blue Devonian slate soils and cooler temperatures characterise the wines with a characteristic minerality and freshness that is retained even in warmer vintages such as 2022.
The 2022 vintage brought ideal conditions for the development of late harvest qualities on the Moselle - warm summer days and cool nights that promoted aromatic complexity while preserving the lively acid structure.
Winemaking philosophy
The Karthäuserhof winery, now run by the Rautenstrauch family, pursues a philosophy of minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the terroir to express itself unadulterated. The late harvest wines are traditionally harvested selectively by hand when the grapes have reached their optimum physiological ripeness. The VDP classification as a Große Lage emphasises the exceptional character of this parcel.
Food pairing suggestions
This Spätlese harmonises perfectly with Asian dishes, whose spiciness is elegantly rounded off by the subtle sweetness of the wine. The wine is also recommended with blue cheese, the saltiness of which forms an attractive contrast to the sweetness of the fruit. In regional cuisine, it is an ideal accompaniment to trout or other freshwater fish, which complement the mineral notes of the wine.
Drinking window: Although already accessible now, this Riesling will benefit considerably from 5-15 years of ageing, during which it will develop additional complexity and those petrol-like notes that characterise mature Mosel Rieslings.
