It is the interplay of stone fruit and herbal spice, this firm bond, this composure in which all the power concentrates and which one can undoubtedly already discern in the bouquet. This is not expansive, but rather straight, pure and firmly structured.

Wine Description for IDIG Riesling Königsbach Grosses Gewächs 2018 1500ml by Christmann

Colour & Appearance
Clear, pale golden yellow.
Nose
An aristocratic bouquet of impressive depth. A purist austerity dominates, along with a profound, stony-chalky character. Above the cool minerality lies a delicate smoothness reminiscent of silk. Aromas of ripe stone fruit, citrus blossom and a distinctive herbal spice lend the wine a quiet yet concentrated power.
Palate
On the palate, the Grosses Gewächs displays masterful structure and herbaceous juiciness. The texture is characterised by fine tannin grip and a vibrant, tonic acidity. The flavour profile is marked by grapefruit, stone fruit and an intense, almost vibrating saline minerality. The wine comes across as extremely straight, firmly built and completely devoid of fat – a Riesling of pure precision.
Finish
Long and focused, with a cool, mineral aftertaste that emphasises the wine’s origin from the chalky bedrock.
Terroir & Origin
The monopoly vineyard site Idig in Königsbach is considered one of the finest terroirs in the Palatinate. The steep south-east facing slope is characterised by massive limestone subsoil and a layer of Terra Fusca, bunter sandstone and basalt.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in a traditional large double oak cask. Fermented bone-dry with just 2 grams of residual sugar.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with halibut with pine nut crust, teriyaki pork belly with Chinese cabbage, or vegetarian dishes such as golden beetroot with lentils and Berbere spice.
Special Features
In the 1500ml magnum bottle, this wine possesses enormous ageing potential. Despite its youthful tension, everything points to a glorious development.
