Wine Description for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Sel. Vecchie Vigne decanted 2000 by Emidio Pepe

Colour & Appearance
After more than two decades of bottle age, this Montepulciano displays a brilliant garnet red with brick-red reflections at the rim – a classic hallmark of noble maturity. The colour remains remarkably intense, testament to the vitality of the old vines and the uncompromising work in the vineyard.
Nose
The bouquet unfolds in layers and complexity: dried cherries, plums and figs meld with notes of tobacco leaf, leather and forest floor. These are joined by hints of cloves, black pepper and a subtle balsamic note. The nose immediately reveals: this is no ordinary Montepulciano.
Palate
On the palate, the wine presents itself with impressive structure and vibrant freshness – remarkable for a 23-year-old wine. The tannins are perfectly integrated, silky yet present. Sour cherry, blackberry and plum are carried by earthy tones and an elegant minerality. The moderate alcohol content of 13.5% ensures balance and drinkability.
Finish
Long, spicy and of remarkable persistence. Liquorice, herbs and a fine acid structure resonate harmoniously – a finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The old vines (Vecchie Vigne) are rooted deep in the chalky soils of northern Abruzzo. Emidio Pepe has managed his vineyards according to biodynamic principles for many years – long before this became a trend.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Montepulciano from old vines, hand-picked and foot-trodden. The wine was aged traditionally and only decanted and bottled after years of maturation – a Pepe speciality that lends the wine additional complexity.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Braised wild boar stew, ossobuco, aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle pasta, Bistecca alla Fiorentina
Special Features
Emidio Pepe is regarded as a pioneer and leading figure in Italian winemaking. His wines are collector’s items that prove Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ranks among Italy’s great red wines.
