Wine Description for Garennes Extra Brut 13-23 LG23 by Georges Laval

Character
Georges Laval is among the most uncompromising advocates of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne. His Cuvée Garennes Extra Brut embodies a purist philosophy that prioritises minimal dosage and maximum expression of terroir. With just 12% alcohol, this wine displays an elegant restraint that lends it drinkability and finesse. The designation 13-23 refers to the harvest years of this multi-vintage blend – a typical hallmark of Laval’s pursuit of complexity and maturity.
Terroir & Origin
The estate is located in Cumières in the Vallée de la Marne, a region renowned for its clay and chalk-rich soils. Laval manages his parcels according to biodynamic principles without herbicides or pesticides. The Garennes vineyard site produces grapes that develop particular tension through the cool north-facing exposure and mineral-rich soils. This authentic approach enables the wines to reflect the true identity of their origin.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The classic Champagne trinity of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier is fused here into a harmonious whole. Laval works with spontaneous fermentation in old wooden barrels and deliberately eschews fining and filtration. The Extra Brut dosage with minimal sugar addition underscores the natural acidity structure and allows the wine to retain its original expressive power. Extended ageing on lees over several years imparts depth and complexity to the cuvée without masking its vibrant freshness.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This precise, dry Champagne is an ideal companion to raw shellfish, oysters or sashimi. The restrained dosage harmonises beautifully with aged cheeses such as Comté or with roasted poultry. The wine also displays its full elegance alongside mushroom dishes or nutty appetisers. As an aperitif, it reveals its elegant, unobtrusive nature.
