Wine Description for Fausoni Barbaresco DOCG 2023 by Sottimano

Character
The Fausoni is one of the most compelling single-vineyard releases from Sottimano – a Barbaresco that embodies the winery’s philosophy in its purest form: no compromises, no calculation, only the honest language of terroir. The Sottimano family has counted among the quiet giants of Langhe for decades, never seeking the noise of the marketplace. Their wines speak for themselves.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site Fausoni lies in the municipality of Neive, one of the three classic Barbaresco communes alongside Barbaresco itself and Treiso. Neive is renowned for its characteristically more powerful, structured Nebbiolo interpretations, shaped by calcareous clay soils and a hillside position that ensures the vineyard receives ample sunshine whilst maintaining good drainage. The vintage 2023 was marked in Piedmont by warmth and dryness – a year that produced concentrated wines, yet demanded artisanal finesse to preserve freshness and balance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s most demanding grape varieties – thin-skinned and yet rich in tannins, aromatically complex whilst characterised by pronounced acidity. Sottimano vinifies with tradition in mind, employing extended maceration periods and careful oak ageing that frames rather than masks the variety’s characteristic features – rose petals, tar, red cherries and spices. The Fausoni is vinified as a single-vineyard wine, thereby reflecting the winery’s commitment to provenance.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A Barbaresco of this quality calls for the cuisine of its homeland: Brasato al Barolo, Tajarin with white truffle or a mature Parmigiano Reggiano are classic companions. Equally recommended are game dishes such as venison haunch or hare ragù. Those who exercise patience will be rewarded – this wine opens fully only with decanting or after several more years in the cellar.
