The Azienda Agricola Sottimano was bought in the 60s by Rino Sottimano and is located in the middle of the Cottà site. In the following years, it was successively extended by the Currá, Fausoni, Basarin and Pajoré crus. Today the winery is run by son Andrea and his sisters Elena and Claudia. Situated in the triangle of Barbaresco, Neive, and Treiso, Sottimano has been working according to biodynamic guidelines for years in order to bottle the character of the five crus as precisely as possible.
The Cru Fausoni is located just outside of Neive and produces exceptional wines with a good balance of elegance, fragrant aromatics and deep concentration. The site with only 1.5 hectares is Sottimano's smallest cru with the youngest vineyards with about 45-year-old vines in south-west orientation.
Fermentation is always spontaneous with their own yeasts, maceration is usually 25 days and BSA is also spontaneous in French oak. The wines mature for 24 months in the barrel , 12 months of which are on the lees. The use of wood in winemaking has been modernised with the 2014 vintage, making the wines appear more accessible with immense vibration and depth even in their youth. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Nose
At the beginning, the 2019 Barbaresco Fausoni fascinates with its earthy, spicy character. There are ethereal traits that play ingeniously with its forest aromas. Underwood, forest floor and pine bark stand next to some tree resin, pine needles and cones. A hint of pine also comes to the fore. Juniper and black pepper gave it plenty of spice. The fruit struggles at first against these dominant nuances, but becomes more perceptible with patience. Plum, elderberry and raspberry now slowly pick up speed.
Palate
On the palate, it is once again evident that Nebbiolo - like Pinot Noir - must be served correctly in order to unfold its full elegance. It is straight as a die. The tannin is only restrainedly active and very fine-grained. The Barbaresco Fausoni seems quite compact, but lives from a generous minerality. No fruit sweetness or other disturbing factors counteract this stony, cool impression. The fruit slowly changes towards sweet and sour cherry. The spicy and ethereal nuances of the nose are currently only very restrained in the reverberation.
