Wine Description for Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2019 1500ml Magnum from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous golden yellow with amber-tinged reflections that reveal the concentration and maturity of this extraordinary Grand Cru. In the magnum bottle, the wine presents itself with impressive brilliance and depth.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly complex: ripe yellow pear, quince jelly and mirabelle plum meet roasted hazelnuts and a hint of honey. Beneath this lies the volcanic minerality of the Rangen with smoky notes, damp slate and exotic spices such as ginger and white pepper. A subtle salty breeze underscores its unique provenance.
- Palate
- Powerful yet remarkably refined. The 14% alcohol is perfectly integrated into a vibrant acidity structure that lends the wine freshness and elegance despite its fullness. Stone fruit aromas, candied citrus peel and tropical fruit notes meld with the characteristic volcanic minerality. On the mid-palate, a creamy texture emerges with subtle residual sweetness, perfectly balanced.
- Finish
- Extraordinarily long and persistent. The mineral signature of the Rangen dominates with salty notes and fine smoke, whilst fruit and spice continue to resonate for minutes. A wine of monumental structure with enormous ageing potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Rangen de Thann is one of the steepest and southernmost Grand Cru vineyard sites in Alsace. The volcanic soils of dark sedimentary rock impart the wines with their distinctive smoky-mineral character. The monopoly Clos-Saint-Urbain encompasses only the finest parcels of this legendary site.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Gris in its most concentrated form, cultivated biodynamically. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, extended ageing in traditional wooden casks. The grapes were harvested at optimal physiological ripeness, which explains the impressive density.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine for great occasions: foie gras, roasted lobster, truffle risotto, calf’s sweetbreads or mature Comté. Also a revelation with Asian cuisine featuring duck breast and spicy sauces.
- Special Features
- Magnum format for optimal maturation. Olivier Humbrecht is a Master of Wine and biodynamic pioneer. This wine can easily age for 15-20 years and will gain further complexity in the process.
