A unique wine spectacle presents itself with the characteristics of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer, which are often similar in Rangen and yet clearly differentiated from Riesling. In 2008, the volcanic rocky Rangen soil as well as noble rot provided a high acid yield, especially in the lower part of the Clos closest to the river. There, the vines benefited from the humid air. In contrast to usual, the fermentation required some patience due to the strong noble rot, whereby a balanced interplay of sweetness and acidity manifested itself. The 2008 vintage represented an extremely balanced Rangen, with its green and juicy soil in summer, sufficient water and a beautiful autumn that preserved the amazing acid structure in the grapes.

The 2008 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain attracts attention with its dense, bright and intense golden yellow colour. It seduces the senses with a range of fruity notes such as pineapple, orange, dried fig, baked apple, mango and quince. This fruit potpourri is underpinned by the smoky scent of the volcanic rock on which the grapes ripened, as well as an intense spice palette of cardamom, saffron and cinnamon. In all its fullness and power, this wine is a true miracle of expression.

On the palate, the smoky and earthy notes dominate in an elegant harmony with opulent fruit and an energetic, invigorating acidity. The wines of the 2008 vintage are characterised by a robust structure that gives them lively and youthful qualities. They are pleasant to taste and ideally complement the flavours of strong dishes.

As harmonious accompaniments for this good drop, I suggest: A terrine of foie gras with smoked sturgeon and pears, partridge on chestnuts with creamy red cabbage or a cheese from the region Reblochon, gratinated with black truffle in a filigree puff pastry coat.
