Wine Description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot AOC 2024 by Thomas Morey

Character
A Premier Cru of classical Burgundy elegance – precise, mineral-driven and possessing that unmistakable depth which the finest vineyard sites of the Côte de Beaune are capable of producing. Thomas Morey, one of the defining winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet, stands for a vinification that lets the terroir speak, without overworking it. The 2024 vintage, following a climatically challenging yet ultimately promising growing season, should yield wines of vibrant tension and clear structure.
Terroir & Origin
The Morgeot ranks among the most renowned and largest Premier Cru vineyard sites in Chassagne-Montrachet. The parcels lie on calcareous, clay-rich soils with partly reddish weathered substrates, which impart the wine with a characteristic fullness and depth that distinguishes it from the more elegant, mineral-driven sites in the northern part of the appellation. The south-easterly facing slopes ensure good ripeness whilst maintaining freshness – a balance that decides everything in Burgundy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Chardonnay in Burgundy is no mere grape variety, but a medium – a translator of the soil. Thomas Morey is renowned for meticulous, artisanal vinification based on restrained oak usage and respect for the natural acidity structure of Chardonnay. The wine is traditionally aged in barrel, with the proportion of new oak deliberately limited so as not to obscure the distinctive character of Morgeot. With 13.0% alcohol and dry vinification, the wine presents itself as balanced and free from any heaviness.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine that ennobles both table and dish. Classically it harmonises with lobster or scallops in butter sauce, but also with roasted turbot or sweetbreads. The fullness of Morgeot furthermore carries creamy risottos and mature soft cheeses of Burgundian tradition such as Époisses with distinction. Those opening it young should decant – or better still: exercise patience for a few years.
