Wine Description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with distinctly green reflections – a youthful, vibrant impression in the glass.
- Nose
- Finely drawn and precise, yet seductively sensual. Lemon oil, lime zest and bright citrus notes dominate initially, underpinned by a creamy, white-fleshed fruit. Poached pear and a hint of cardamom add aromatic depth. A subtle reduction lends additional complexity to the bouquet – typical of Morey’s restrained, natural approach.
- Palate
- Juicy and engaging with that delicate creaminess that characterises great Chassagne Chardonnays. The texture displays phenolic presence without heaviness, whilst the piquant, citric acidity provides tension and freshness. The wine possesses substance, yet remains elegant and vibrant.
- Finish
- Energetic and tense with mouth-watering hints of salted lemon. The minerality carries far, the aftertaste is precise and invigorating – a wine that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- Les Chenevottes lies north of Chassagne on gentle slopes between Les Macherelles and Saint-Aubin. The name refers to hemp (Chanvre) formerly cultivated there. Morey’s parcels comprise approximately 50% from Les Bondues, 25% from Les Combes and 25% from the surrounding vineyard site. The loamy soil with iron oxide content gives the wine its characteristic tension between richness and freshness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay, fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrel and tank. The malolactic fermentation proceeds spontaneously, ageing takes place on the lees without bâtonnage – Morey’s trust in natural development. Approximately 20% new oak, minimal sulphiting (maximum 35 mg/l). A wine that prioritises terroir over technique.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Scallops with lemon butter, pan-fried turbot, lobster or langoustines. Also excellent with poultry in cream sauce, veal escalope with morels or aged Comté.
- Special Features
- Thomas Morey belongs to the young generation of purist Burgundy winemakers. His minimalist approach – spontaneous fermentation, no bâtonnage, minimal sulphiting – allows the terroir maximum expression. A 1er Cru with tension and soul.
