Mauro Montanaro is more than just a winemaker and Calafata is more than "just" a winery. It is a wonderful project, in the hills above Lucca, with the foothills of the Apuan Alps to the north and the Mediterranean coast just 20 kilometres away to the west. Vineyards have lain fallow here since the late nineties. Mauro and his friends were able to persuade the owners to lease them the vineyards, some of which were up to 90 years old. The inhabitants of the area gradually helped with more vineyards, equipment, tanks and barrels. Over the last few years, this has resulted in a project that tells a story of revitalisation, commitment and solidarity. Today, the three friends make five great wines from old grape varieties, some of which are indigenous. They also cultivate 13 hectares of vegetable fields, 7 hectares of olive trees and employ 15 people. All of them are political refugees, former drug addicts or other people who have been marginalised by society.
