Wine Description for Cabernet Sauvignon Hemsberg “R” 2023 by Barnert & Drewitz
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, saturated violet-red with vibrant purple reflections towards the rim – a wine that already signals density and youthfulness in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is seductive and multi-layered: blackberries, blackcurrant and sweet cherry form a classic Cabernet foundation, elegantly underscored by delicate notes of fine chocolate and vanilla. A subtle wood spice and a slightly vegetal nuance – typical of the variety – lend the nose depth without overwhelming.
- Palate
- On the palate, this Cabernet Sauvignon reveals remarkable ripeness and elegance. The structure is refined and well-balanced, the tannins silky and well-integrated. Dark berry fruit carries the wine, supported by a fine mineral depth that recalls the granite and sand subsoil of Hemsberg. For a German Cabernet Sauvignon, an extraordinary achievement.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and carried by fresh fruit. The finish concludes with a pleasant tannic presence that hints at ageing potential.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes grow in a south-west facing steep vineyard site with gradients of up to 40 per cent on the Hessian Bergstrasse – one of Germany’s northernmost wine regions, renowned for its exceptional warmth. The subsoil of wind-blown sands over granite debris layers imparts the wine’s mineral character and finesse.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Harvested on 17 September 2023, destemmed and fermented spontaneously over approximately two weeks – the cap was worked down twice daily. Maturation took place over 17 months in a new barrel made from Swabian oak (Medium Toast, cooper from the Palatinate), including malolactic fermentation. Unfiltered, neither enriched nor acidified or de-acidified – a wine made with artisanal consistency and natural methods, with moderate sulphiting.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Ideal with lamb loin with herb crust, braised beef shoulder or aged hard cheese. Also an excellent choice with game such as venison loin or venison roast.
- Special Features
- Only 280 bottles were produced – a genuine rarity from Barnert & Drewitz. This wine impressively demonstrates that Cabernet Sauvignon in Germany can be far more than an experiment: it is a serious, characterful wine with international ambitions.
