Tasting note from from 24.07.2023, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

In 1994, Francesco Leanza reclaimed the land that is now known as Podere Salicutti. He planted the vines on the slope around the cantina, the heart of the estate. Salicutti's latifundia cover a total of 11 hectares of land, divided into 4.5 hectares of vines, an olive grove and woodland. In 2015, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer took over the farm and consistently continue Leanza's organic claim - with a critically-reflective eye on the influence of man and cultivation techniques. Podere Salicutti is the first organically certified winery in Montalcino. The vines, planted in 1994, stand in soils that have never been in contact with conventional sprays.

Teatro is the smallest cru and covers only 0.7 hectares to the left of the cantina. It opens like an amphitheatre to the south and was planted in 1994. The soils are sandy and clayey with skeletons of very fine pebbles to large chunks of limestone and calcareous marl. Teatro has the comparatively coolest microclimate of the three sites and is also the highest, at a good 500 metres above sea level. The wines from Teatro are always dark and deep.

Nose

Ladies & Gentlemen, welcome to this theatre. Sit back and enjoy the view of this smallest site of Podere Salicutti, laid out like an amphitheatre, surrounded and protected by trees. Let yourself be enchanted by the profound and multi-layered nose as well as the high-resolution aroma of this immensely complex wine. Like a high-wire act, the fine fruit is in concentrated balance with the dark aromas of the wine. Cherries, tobacco, sandalwood, bay leaf and warm stones outline the nose, compressed and in a youthful stage more a promise to the future than fully developed stage play. The ensemble is well cast and promises good entertainment, from now until far into the future.

Mouth

Incredibly compact, powerful, yet silky with immense complexity and orchestral aromatic depth, the 2017 Teatro from Podere Salicutti immediately captivates you. It combines the power and strength of a Brunello with the finesse and elegance of a great Burgundy without losing any of its individuality. On the contrary, the omnipresent cherry is omnipresent and is aromatically complemented by laurel and juniper, plus ethereal notes of Tuscan maquis. The tannins are delicate, yet enormously close-meshed and silky in texture. With enormous length, it flows into a cherry-fruity-spicy finish with a cathedral reverberation.
