Wine Description for Bourgogne Aligoté Vieilles Vignes AOC 2023 by Bruno Clavelier

Character
Bruno Clavelier belongs to that generation of Burgundian winemakers who have restored proper appreciation to the often underestimated Aligoté grape. His cuvée from old vines (Vieilles Vignes) impressively demonstrates that Aligoté can be far more than a simple bistro wine. With a modest 12.5% alcohol, this wine embodies that freshness and precision which characterise Burgundy – without sacrificing substance or depth. Here the age of the vines speaks: more concentrated, more complex, more nuanced than ordinary Aligoté.
Terroir & Origin
Burgundy is the home of this underestimated white grape variety, which thrives here on chalky soils and benefits from the continental climate with cool nights. Whilst Chardonnay occupies the premier sites, Aligoté often finds its place on higher-altitude or cooler parcels – which gives the variety its characteristic minerality and acidity structure. The 2023 vintage brought classical conditions to Burgundy after challenging previous years, with well-balanced ripeness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Aligoté is Burgundy’s second white grape variety – spritzier, more direct, more approachable than Chardonnay, yet capable of remarkable complexity in the hands of ambitious winemakers. Old vines naturally produce lower yields and thus more concentrated aromas. Typical characteristics are citrus notes, green apple, white flowers and a saline minerality. Clavelier works respectfully and with minimal intervention, allowing the authentic varietal character and sense of place to speak for themselves.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Aligoté is the classic companion to Burgundian cuisine: gougères, escargots, terrine de poisson or jambon persillé. The lively acidity makes it an ideal partner for oysters, seafood and goat’s cheese. It also shows its strengths with trout, crayfish or a simple vinaigrette over crisp salad. A wine that combines lightness with substance.
