Wine description for Barolo Pira DOCG 2014 1500ml by Roagna
- Colour & Appearance
- A clear, luminous garnet red, already displaying the noble brick-red highlights characteristic of aged Nebbiolo towards the rim.
- Nose
- Aristocratic and profound. The bouquet reveals a cool, dark fruit of blackberries and sloe, which unfolds over time into complex notes of fresh Earl Grey, tobacco and a hint of dark bitter chocolate. A wine that impresses through subtlety rather than sheer power.
- Palate
- On the palate, Roagna’s full mastery is revealed. The texture is silky and ethereal, almost Burgundian in its finesse. A vibrant, invigorating acidity structure balances the 14% alcohol perfectly, whilst a profound minerality gives the wine backbone. Despite its maturity, it feels fresh, wiry and enormously precise.
- Finish
- Long-lasting and highly elegant with a fine-grained, perfectly integrated tannin finish.
- Terroir & Origin
- Sourced from the monopoly vineyard site Pira in Castiglione Falletto; characterised by blue limestone marl and the typical calcareous structure essential to these terroir-driven Barolos.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to tagliatelle with white truffle, game birds such as partridge with chestnuts or classic rabbit with creamy polenta.
- Special Features
- A “long-distance runner” in the 1.5-litre magnum format, which has now reached its first great drinking phase, yet still has years ahead of it.
