Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Lazzarito 2021 1500ml Magnum by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Deep cherry to pomegranate red with remarkable transparency – classic for a young Nebbiolo from Serralunga, which makes no attempt to hide its origins.
Nose
A wine that does not yet reveal itself. The Lazzarito 2021 appears almost closed in its youth, almost forbidding – and therein lies its fascination. Little obvious fruit, but all the more depth: stalks, undergrowth, damp earth, iron-rich stone, a hint of coal and violet flowers. At the very edge, a suggestion of bluish fruit. This is Serralunga in its purest form.
Palate
On the palate, the true strength of this wine unfolds: a pressing, knife-sharp acidity that carries the structure. This is joined by firm, dense tannins, a slight warmth in the fruit and a precision reminiscent of a taut bow. The ripeness is not broad, but runs deep – tightly woven, concentrated, without any heaviness.
Finish
Saline, mineral, driven by great energy. The finish is long, persistent and marked by that characteristic grip which will accompany this wine for years, if not decades, to come.
Terroir & Origin
The Lazzarito lies in Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most austere and longest-lived communes in the Barolo region. The amphitheatre-shaped parcel with south-westerly exposure sits between 260 and 390 metres altitude. The limestone and clay-rich soils – Helvetian sandstone and marl – are the reason for this wine’s uncompromising minerality and structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Nebbiolo from vines with an average age of 42 years. Cold maceration over three to four days, 20–25% whole berries, approximately three weeks‘ maceration in stainless steel with gentle submerged cap management. Malolactic fermentation in used barriques, followed by 24 months‘ ageing in large wood – a classical, respectful vinification that gives the final word to the terroir.
Special Features
The magnum bottle (1500 ml) is the ideal format for a wine of this structure and longevity. The Lazzarito 2021 requires time – plenty of time. Those who open it today will catch a glimpse of the future. Those who wait will be rewarded. Drinking window: from 2030 onwards, peak likely between 2035 and 2050.
