Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Cerequio 2021 1500ml Magnum by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, pale cherry red with medium transparency – classic and unmistakable for a young Nebbiolo from the heart of the Barolo region.
- Nose
- Nuanced and characterised by noble restraint. A slight reduction initially imparts a mineral-smoky note with a hint of blackcurrant. Beneath this unfold wild strawberries, plums and cherries, accompanied by fresh mint and delicate floral hints – violets, perhaps even dried roses. A wine that has not yet revealed all its cards.
- Palate
- Here the true nature of this Cerequio reveals itself: firm, taut and nervous. The fruit retreats almost entirely, allowing a dense, energised structure to emerge. The pressing acidity is precise and cutting, the tannins chewy and chalky – a wine that still holds itself tightly closed, yet in its depths hints at monumental grandeur.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and sustained by remarkable length and energy. The finish confirms: this wine is built for decades.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Cerequio ranks among Barolo’s great historic vineyard sites. Vietti’s parcel lies in the municipality of Barolo at approximately 320 metres elevation, south-facing, on calcareous and clay-rich marl from Sant’Agata – a soil that bestows elegance and structure in equal measure. The vines average 36 years of age, with a planting density of 4,600 vines per hectare.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2021. Vinification follows a modern, precise approach: three to four days of cold maceration with 20–25% whole berries, followed by 27 days of maceration in stainless steel with exclusive submerged cap management. Malolactic fermentation in used barriques, subsequently 24 months of ageing in large wooden vessels. The magnum format promises an even slower, more harmonious development.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This Barolo demands patience – and equally characterful dishes: Brasato al Barolo, wild boar salami, truffle tajarin or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Ideally not opened before 2030.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500 ml) is the ideal ageing format for a wine of this category and potential. According to the Vietti winery, Cerequio is their most age-worthy and complex Barolo – a wine that sleeps today, yet in its silence already speaks of greatness.
