Wine description for Barolo DOCG Brunate 2021 1500ml Magnum by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear, quite pale cherry red with medium transparency – typical of a young Nebbiolo that reveals its depth more through flavour than colour.
- Nose
- Cool and dark, yet of striking elegance: dry wood, spices and dry herbs form the serious foundation, which is broken up by a fine, almost playful layer of fresh mint, lovage and red flowers. A distinctive chalky, limestone note constantly reminds one of its origin from the marls of Sant’Agata.
- Palate
- Here the Brunate reveals its full class: fantastic depth, broad shoulders, yet never cumbersome. Intense and expressive, but threaded through with cool freshness that keeps the wine lively and precise despite its density. At the core, red berry and meaty-dark fruit, played upon by mint, black tea, pipe tobacco, orange peel, a hint of balsamic and rosemary. The chalky tannin is firm yet refined – a wine of generous texture and extraordinary length.
- Finish
- Long, intense and marked by mineral austerity that demands more. The herbal and tea aromas linger for a long time – a finish that underscores the greatness of both the vintage and the vineyard site equally.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the historic vineyard site Brunate in the municipality of La Morra, located on the south-facing slope towards Barolo, at 300 to 400 metres elevation. The soil of Sant’Agata marl – rich in limestone and clay – gives the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness. The vines average 50 years old and are cultivated using the Guyot system with approximately 4,600 plants per hectare.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, harvested on 30 September 2021. A three to four-day cold maceration with 20–25% whole berries ensures aromatic finesse and freshness. Maceration lasted 22 days in stainless steel with exclusive submerged cap management. Malolactic fermentation and the initial ageing phases took place in used barriques, before the wine was aged for 24 months in large wooden vessels – a classic Vietti approach that unites structure and elegance.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A wine for the grand table: Brasato al Barolo, braised lamb shoulder with rosemary or Tajarin with white truffle are ideal partners. This Barolo also reveals its full potential alongside aged Parmigiano Reggiano or wild boar ragù.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle (1500 ml) provides optimal ageing conditions and should further develop this already impressive wine over decades. The 2021 vintage is considered exceptionally successful in Piedmont – cool, fresh and structured. A Barolo that already brings pleasure today, but will show its true face only in 10 to 20 years.
