Wine Description for Athénaïs Bourgogne Aligoté AOC 2022 from Château de Béru

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, vibrant straw yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that commands presence even in the glass.
Nose
A fascinating aromatic cosmos that oscillates between different worlds: must-like notes meet subtly smoky top notes, whilst fully ripe stone fruit and waxy quince take centre stage. These are joined by light tobacco and white pepper with its characteristic cedary-citric note. The overall impression is warm and inviting, with pastry-like nuances and a fine spice reminiscent of mace.
Palate
Here the true personality of this Aligoté reveals itself: A distinctive, fine-grained phenolic structure with a leafy character marks the attack – initially almost somewhat austere, but then with excellent grip. The fully ripe fruit is carried by lively acidity play and generous extract. The body is markedly spicy, the finish stimulating and smoky-saline.
Finish
Cool and citric-herbal with lime zest, which unfolds elegantly in the long aftertaste – a finale that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes hail from Saint-Bris, where they thrive at 210 to 250 metres altitude on the famous clayey-chalky Kimmeridge soils with east-south-easterly exposure – that very geological formation which also defines the great Chablis wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Aligoté, gently pneumatically pressed and spontaneously fermented. Aged for 12 to 18 months in traditional Burgundy Pièce (228 litres), which imparts additional complexity and texture to the wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This characterful Aligoté demands equally distinctive partners: Gougères, scallops with brown butter, trout meunière, goat’s cheese or Comté. Also an excellent choice with oysters or fritto misto.
Special Features
Part of the Négociant line from Athénaïs de Béru, which proves that Aligoté is capable of far more than merely serving as a base for Kir. A serious, complex white wine with Burgundian soul at a fair price.
