Tasting Note for Aphros Daphne DOC 2021 by Aphros Wine

Colour & Appearance
Pale lemon yellow with luminous green highlights and high brilliance.
Nose
Initially quiet and shy, the wine reveals a fascinating interplay of aromas after a little time. At its core are nuances of candied quince, yellow plum, pear and apple, underlined by delicate spice. Notes of allspice and white pepper set fresh accents, whilst herbal hints of marjoram, tarragon, thyme and lavender evoke the impression of a sun-drenched garden path.
Palate
At a slender 10.5% ABV, the wine presents itself almost weightlessly on the palate. Delicate phenolics lend it structure and grip without ever feeling heavy. The herbal, spicy fruit is carried by a clear, vibrant texture – an interplay of puristic freshness and polished substance.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes originate from the Lima sub-region in Vinho Verde. At the historic Casal do Paço estate, the vines grow on south-facing slopes. Winemaker Vasco Croft’s ecological masterpiece is defined by granite soils, species-rich forests and a sustainable approach in harmony with nature.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Single-varietal Loureiro, hand-harvested on 16 September 2021. Following 14 days of skin contact and subsequent sedimentation in stainless steel tanks, the must ferments at 15–18 °C in chestnut casks and concrete eggs. Ageing on the fine lees sharpens the profile of this bone-dry wine (1.5 g/l residual sugar).
Food Pairings
Superb with steamed cod with herbs, scallops, local freshwater fish ceviche or a fine summer salad with tarragon dressing.
Key Characteristics
Vasco Croft is regarded as a pioneer of biodynamics in Portugal. The work follows the astronomical calendar, whilst wild yeasts and minimal sulphur are utilised in the cellar. The Daphne presents an extraordinary interpretation of the Loureiro grape variety, far removed from commercial Vinho Verdes.
