Wine description for Diplomate d'Empire, Blanc VdF 2022 from Abbatucci
Colour & appearance
Brilliant straw yellow with greenish reflections, clear and of medium viscosity, gently wetting the glass - a typical expression of Corsica's granite terroirs.
Nose
A fascinating bouquet that perfectly captures the Mediterranean identity of Corsica. Macchia-Herbs, white flowers and citrus fruits dominate, underpinned by a salty, mineral note. On contact with the air, nuances of white peach, bitter almond and a hint of wild herbs develop - a reflection of the Corsican landscape in the glass.
Palate
The wine shows impressive precision on the palate. The acid structure is clearly defined without being aggressive and forms the perfect framework for the medium body. The barely perceptible residual sweetness gives the wine balance, while the salty minerality, typical of wines characterised by granite, provides length and complexity. The aroma mirrors the nose, with additional notes of lemongrass and a hint of fennel on the long, precise finish.
General information
This Blanc is an impressive example of the rescue work Abbatucci has done for Corsica's indigenous grape varieties. The combination of Vermentino (known locally as Rolle), Brustiano and Bianco Gentile - all old Corsican varieties - results in a wine of unmistakable character. Biodynamic cultivation on granite soils and minimal intervention in the cellar allow these rare grape varieties to develop their full expressive power.
Food pairing suggestions
The salty minerality and precise acidity structure predestine this wine for seafood, in particular Grilled sea bass with fennel or Seafood risotto. Also to Goat cheese or a classic Brocciu (Corsican cream cheese), it shows its best side. The subtle bitterness on the finish harmonises wonderfully with Mediterranean vegetable dishes with olive oil and fresh herbs.
Special features
This wine is cultural heritage in bottle form. Abbatucci's work to preserve autochthonous grape varieties is invaluable to the wine world. The fact that such a characterful wine has to be declared as a simple Vin de France due to rigid AOC regulations emphasises the need for a more flexible appellation system. Diplomate d'Empire 2022 is not only an outstanding wine, but also a living document of Corsican wine culture and a convincing argument in favour of preserving the diversity of grape varieties.
