Wine Description for Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Ostrea AOC 2022 1500ml Magnum by Trapet Père & Fils
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, medium ruby red with cherry-red core. The magnum bottle already promises visually a slower, more harmonious development than the standard bottle.
- Nose
- Expressive bouquet with red cherries, raspberries and a fine herbal spice. Beneath these, violets, a hint of forest floor and a subtle minerality reminiscent of limestone emerge – a subtle allusion to the cuvée name „Ostrea“ (Latin for oyster). The biodynamic approach of the house is reflected in the clarity and precision of the aromas.
- Palate
- Elegant, refined Pinot Noir with silky texture and fine tannin structure. Red fruits dominate – sour cherry, cranberry – underpinned by a vibrant acidity characteristic of the 2022 vintage. On the mid-palate, a beautiful spice unfolds with hints of clove and pepper. The wine already shows drinking pleasure, yet possesses the backbone for several years of bottle age.
- Finish
- Medium to long, with persistent fruit and a saline, mineral note that refreshes the palate and invites the next sip. The fine tannins remain present without dominating.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Cuvée Ostrea unites various parcels from Gevrey-Chambertin, one of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations. Jean-Louis Trapet has managed his vineyards biodynamically since the mid-1990s and is counted among the pioneers of this movement in the region. The chalky soils lend the wine its characteristic minerality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Pinot Noir from biodynamically managed vineyards. Careful hand-harvesting, gentle vinification and maturation in French oak barrels (with moderate new wood content) respect the fruit and terroir. The magnum bottle favours slower, more harmonious maturation.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Roasted quail, Coq au Vin, beef tartare, Bœuf Bourguignon, game birds, aged Comté or Époisses. The saline minerality also makes it an intriguing companion to oysters – a bold yet rewarding pairing.
- Special Features
- Magnum format (1500ml) for optimal maturation. From one of Burgundy’s most renowned biodynamic estates. The 2022 vintage is considered elegant and fresh, with good acidity structure.
