Velich winery is located in Apetlon in the nature reserve of Burgenland’s Seewinkel region on Lake Neusiedl. It was founded in 1933, but only really gained momentum in the 1990s under brothers Heinz Velich and Robert Velich, who later founded Moric winery. Even back then, the Tiglat emerged from a single vineyard site planted in 1959, the first Burgenland Chardonnay that also made a real splash internationally. Later came the Darscho. In Heinz Velich’s vineyards, exclusively white grape varieties have been planted to this day. Around 45% Chardonnay as well as Muskat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling and Bouvier. The simple wines are aged in tank, whilst the complex wines and the sweet wines, which also emerge in the best vintages, are aged in used wooden barrels. The portfolio is deliberately concise and the wines have a calm character, much like their producer Heinz Velich.
