Wine Description for Sole e Vento Terre Siciliane IGT 2024 by Marco de Bartoli

Colour & Appearance
Intense, shimmering golden yellow in the glass – a visual promise of Sicilian sunshine.
Nose
Captivating aromatics and characterised by Mediterranean abundance: kumquats and ripe mango form the exotic foundation, whilst thyme honey, elderflower and fennel with its green herb create a fascinating bridge between fruit and herbal spice. An aromatic profile that unites the volcanic minerality of Pantelleria with the Mediterranean freshness of Marsala.
Palate
Juicy and charming with seductive fruit richness, elegantly counterbalanced by a fine bitter citrus note. The low fermentation temperature and seven months of yeast ageing lend the wine texture and depth without compromising its vibrant freshness. At a moderate 12.5% alcohol, it remains playfully light – a summer wine with substance.
Finish
Medium length with lingering citrus nuances and a slightly saline aftertaste that recalls Sicily’s sea breeze.
Terroir & Origin
A fascinating assemblage of two Sicilian terroirs: Zibibbo vines (over 30 years old) are rooted in the volcanic terraces of Pantelleria, whilst Grillo grapes (over 20 years old) thrive on sandy loam in Marsala. This combination of volcanic minerality and maritime freshness fundamentally shapes the wine’s character.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Cuvée of Zibibbo (Muscat d’Alexandrie) and Grillo. Following 24-hour maceration, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts occurs over 48 hours at low temperatures. Seven months of ageing on fine lees in stainless steel imparts complexity without oak influence – a purist interpretation of Sicilian white wine craft.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion: perfect with grilled swordfish, pasta with sardines and wild fennel, caponata, fried squid or creamy goat’s cheese. Also a revelation enjoyed solo on the terrace.
Special Features
Marco de Bartoli is among the pioneers of authentic Sicilian wine culture. The Sole e Vento embodies his philosophy: traditional grape varieties, respectful treatment of terroir and minimal intervention in the cellar. An honest, characterful wine without pretence.
