Wine Description for Rosé de la Côte des Bar Brut Nature 2017 by Louise Brison

Character
Louise Brison belongs to that new generation of Champagne producers who pursue an uncompromising path with Brut Nature – that is, without any dosage whatsoever. This rosé made from pure Pinot Noir reveals the honest, unvarnished side of Champagne: purist, straightforward and marked by mineral precision. The 2017 vintage brought balanced conditions to Champagne with good ripeness and preserved freshness – ideal prerequisites for a Champagne that must do without the veil of dosage.
Terroir & Origin
The Côte des Bar in the southern Aube département differs markedly from the northern heartland of Champagne. Here, Kimmeridge limestone soils dominate – the same geological formation as in Chablis – which impart a distinctive mineral tension to the wines. The more continental climate with warmer summers enables fuller ripeness of Pinot Noir, which is particularly advantageous for rosé Champagnes. This region was long underestimated, but is experiencing a remarkable renaissance through artisanal producers like Louise Brison.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Pinot Noir reveals its powerful, fruit-driven character in the Côte des Bar without losing elegance. Crafted as Brut Nature – with zero grams of dosage – this style demands perfectly ripened grapes and impeccable vinification. Any weakness would be ruthlessly exposed. The mineral structure of the terroir carries the wine where sugar would otherwise compensate. At 12.5% alcohol, it remains remarkably light-footed and approachable.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The dryness and minerality make this Champagne ideally suited to gastronomy. Perfect with raw fish, sashimi or oysters. It also harmonises beautifully with smoked salmon, vitello tonnato or cold roast beef. The structure can handle sautéed mushrooms or aged goat’s cheese. A versatile food companion that combines substance with finesse.
