Wine Description for Riesling Schieferkristall Trocken QbA 2022 from Karthäuserhof

Colour & Appearance
Pale, radiant golden yellow in the glass – a visual promise of the elegance to follow.
Nose
The nose reveals that mineral coolness for which Mosel slate is renowned. With a little air, a precise aromatic spectrum unfolds: peach and apple form the foundation, accentuated by the tart freshness of apple skin, the vibrant acidity of redcurrant and a hint of grapefruit. Purist, focused, seductive.
Palate
On the palate, this Riesling presents itself as a textbook example of Mosel finesse: invigorating spice meets refreshing acidity, which never dominates but is instead elegantly integrated. The mouth-filling juiciness lends the wine remarkable presence despite its slender 11.5% vol. A wine that rests within itself – not a trace of effort, only natural balance.
Finish
The finish is clearly defined, with lingering minerality and a saline aftertaste that invites the next sip. Refreshing and never tiring.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes come predominantly from the legendary Karthäuserhofberg, supplemented by parcels from Mertesdorf and Waldrach. This deliberate assemblage of different terroirs creates a complete picture of the Karthäuserhof signature – from the cool minerality of the slate to the earthy depth of the different vineyard sites.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in pure form, hand-harvested and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place two-thirds in stainless steel, one-third in traditional wooden cask – a clever balance between freshness and texture. Six months on the lees impart additional complexity and mouthfeel to the wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
An ideal aperitif, yet one that also shines with hearty, earthy cuisine: smoked trout on toast with trout roe, sorrel soup with fresh cheese ravioli or brawn with fried potatoes. The vibrant acidity cuts through fat, whilst the minerality harmonises perfectly with rustic flavours.
Special Features
At only 11.5% alcohol, a textbook example of modern, easy-drinking Riesling style – serious enough for connoisseurs, accessible enough for any occasion. The perfect introduction to the world of Karthäuserhof.
