Wine Description for Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay Chalk and Loess 2023 from Weingut am Klotz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with bright, slightly greenish reflections – a visual promise of freshness and vibrancy in the glass.
Nose
Enormously appealing and multi-layered. The cuvée elegantly oscillates between fruity and herbal notes: nettle and sage dominate, but are accompanied by exotic tones such as green mango, grilled pineapple and papaya. Kaffir lime leaves and bergamot zest set fresh, almost tart accents, whilst star anise and clove contribute a delicate spice. Subtly yeasty nuances evoke brioche with salted butter – a hint of complexity.
Palate
Here the true class of this wine reveals itself. The texture takes centre stage: dense structure, pleasant phenolics that elegantly sit in front of the fruit. The yellow fruits appear rich, but noticeably more restrained than on the nose – brighter, finer, more precise. Behind this, stony and mineral components emerge, lending the wine an almost saline quality. This minerality skilfully binds together the spicy aromas and the herbal breeze in the background. Enormously stimulating, far removed from any heaviness.
Finish
Persistently mineral with saline freshness that invites the next sip. The structure carries far without feeling heavy.
Terroir & Origin
The wine’s name reveals it: chalk and loess characterise this Baden white wine from the house of Franz Keller. These soil types lend the wine its distinctive minerality and structure – terroir pure from one of Germany’s finest regions.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A thoughtfully crafted cuvée of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, uniting the best of both worlds: Burgundian elegance meets Baden precision. At 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains light-footed and inviting to drink.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Scallops with herb butter, pike-perch on fennel vegetables, goat’s cheese tart with thyme, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or Asian dishes with lemongrass and ginger.
Special Features
A wine that ranks very highly in national comparison. The hallmark of the renowned winery Franz Keller is unmistakable – structured, precise, without compromise.
