Nose
Immensely inviting and multi-layered. The aromatic spectrum shifts between herbaceous notes of stinging nettle and sage, alongside an exotic fruit component reminiscent of green mango, grilled pineapple and papaya. Fresh accents of kaffir lime leaves and tart bergamot pair with a fine spice of star anise and clove. In the background, a delicate yeast note emerges, evoking associations of warm brioche with salted butter.
Palate
On the palate, the Burgundian signature of the minds behind Weingut am Klotz (which includes the renowned estate Franz Keller) is beautifully revealed. The wine captivates with a gripping mouthfeel and a dense, textured structure. The fine phenolics take centre stage here, while the yellow fruit is much more discreet and almost cooler compared to the nose. A salty, stony vein runs through the wine, perfectly capturing the herbal spice and ensuring an enormous drinking flow – lively, wire-to-wire and miles away from any heaviness.
Terroir & Origin
This wine is rooted in the Markgräflerland region of Baden, more precisely on the spectacular Isteiner Klotz in southwestern Germany. The terroir there is a geological rarity in Germany: it is shaped by Ice Age loess and primeval Jurassic limestone, a rock formation otherwise primarily known from Burgundy. These soils bestow upon the vines a striking, tart structure and an almost salty freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A white blend of Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Chardonnay from the 2023 vintage. The estate operates under a rigorous, sustainable philosophy and relies on organic farming. In the cellar, the credo is minimal intervention: the grapes are gently harvested and selected by hand to bring the pure character of origin into the bottle unadulterated. The wine is vinified dry and has a moderate 12.5% abv.
Food Pairings
An excellent partner for pan-fried turbot with herb butter, white poultry in a delicate cream sauce, or a creamy seafood risotto.
