Wine Description for Pinot Blanc & Chardonnay Chalk and Loess 2023 from Weingut am Klotz

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with bright, slightly green reflections – a visual promise of freshness and vitality.
Nose
Enormously appealing and complex, this cuvée presents itself in the bouquet. The aromatics swing fascinatingly between fruity exoticism and herbaceous spice: nettle and sage dominate, flanked by green mango, grilled pineapple and papaya. Kaffir lime leaves and bergamot zest set fresh to herbal accents, whilst star anise and clove contribute a delicate spice. Subtle yeasty nuances recall brioche with salted butter – an aromatic fireworks display.
Palate
Here the signature of the renowned Weingut Franz Keller reveals itself. Texture dominates – this wine is characterised by its dense structure and pleasant phenolics, which elegantly position themselves in front of the fruit. The yellow fruit aromas appear richer, but distinctly quieter and brighter than on the nose. Behind them unfold stony and mineral components, which lend the wine an almost saline quality. This mineral vein cleverly binds together the spicy aromas and the herbal breeze in the background. Enormously engaging, never sluggish – a wine that plays at the very forefront in national comparison.
Finish
Persistently mineral with saline freshness that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The wine’s name reveals it already: chalk and loess characterise the soils of these Baden vineyard sites and lend the wine its characteristic minerality and structure. This soil combination is ideal for Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
Grape Variety & Vinification
A thoughtfully crafted cuvée of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, which combines the best of both grape varieties: the structure and minerality of Pinot Blanc with the complexity and aromatics of Chardonnay. At a moderate 12.5% vol., the wine remains elegant and approachable.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect with grilled monkfish, scallops with herb butter, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese tart or Asian dishes with lemongrass and coriander.
Special Features
A wine that proves German white wines can do far more than simply please – structured, complex and with pronounced terroir character.
