Wine Description for Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese VDP Grosse Lage 2023 from Karthäuserhof

Colour & Appearance
Pale lemon yellow with pronounced green reflections – youthful, vibrant, full of energy.
Nose
A fascinating cascade of aromas: pear, quince and kumquats combine with candied lemon and delicate smoky slate notes. With air contact, ethereal nuances of lemon balm and lemon thyme develop, along with fine lemon zest. A fragrant interplay at the beginning of a promising evolution.
Palate
Juicy and elegant, this Riesling glides across the tongue – the balance between fruity sweetness and mineral freshness is masterful. The saline minerality of the Devonian slate gives the wine that tension which characterises great Mosel Rieslings. At a moderate 8.5% alcohol, it feels playfully light, yet the structure promises considerable ageing potential.
Finish
Long, precise and carried by crystalline acidity. The sweetness and minerality fade harmoniously, with a hint of citrus peel and wet slate.
Terroir & Origin
The legendary Karthäuserhofberg – a monopoly vineyard site with south-southwest exposure and slopes of up to 55%. The rose-copper coloured Devonian slate and the distinctive microclimate create ideal conditions for world-class Riesling.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested Riesling grapes, gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel under controlled conditions. Six to eight months on the lees impart additional complexity and texture to the wine.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with pan-fried monkfish with saffron sauce, caramelised foie gras, Thai curries with coconut milk or blue cheese. Also a pleasure on its own – but the ageing potential speaks for patience.
Special Features
A classic Mosel Riesling from the VDP Grosse Lage category, continuing the centuries-old tradition of Karthäuserhof. The 2023 vintage already shows finesse and elegance, but will mature into true greatness over 5-15 years.
