Wine Description for Riesling Frauenberg GG 2024 1500ml Magnum by Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
The Frauenberg GG from Battenfeld-Spanier represents dry Riesling at the highest level – precise, mineral-driven and with that tension that characterises great Rheinhessen Rieslings. The magnum bottle promises a slowed, more harmonious development and makes this wine an ideal choice for special occasions or extended cellaring. Hans-Oliver Spanier has established himself as one of the most consistent advocates of terroir-oriented viticulture in Rheinhessen.
Terroir & Origin
The Frauenberg near Hohen-Sülzen ranks among Rheinhessen’s outstanding limestone vineyard sites. The Muschelkalk soils impart a characteristic minerality and structure to the wines, reminiscent of great Chablis or Sancerre. Battenfeld-Spanier manages this vineyard site with uncompromising care – biodynamically, with low yields and without cellar interventions that would obscure its origin. Rheinhessen, often underestimated, reveals its true potential for great vineyard wines here.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds ideal conditions on limestone: the soils regulate water supply and nutrient balance perfectly, whilst the vine develops its characteristic acidity structure. At Battenfeld-Spanier, GG (Großes Gewächs) means spontaneous fermentation, ageing in traditional wooden casks and time on the lees. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% vol. underscores the estate’s philosophy: elegance over power, precision over opulence. The wines are only released once they have overcome their initial reserve.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This dry Riesling with its limestone minerality harmonises beautifully with seafood, particularly oysters, scallops or langoustines. Classic pairings include trout meunière, monkfish with herb butter or pike-perch with saffron sauce. It also excels with asparagus and hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese or a refined poultry terrine. The acidity structure makes it an ideal companion for dishes with citrus or herbs.
