Wine Description for „Aus den Lagen“ Riesling 2024 by Christmann

Character
The Christmann estate in Gimmeldingen is among the top producers of the Palatinate and has long been a member of the VDP. The „Aus den Lagen“ Riesling represents the entry-level category of the house – a term that should be understood relatively, as even these estate wines are vinified with the same care as the vineyard site wines. The subtle residual sweetness points to a off-dry to dry style that reflects Christmann’s philosophy of precision and drinkability. Here Riesling reveals itself in its accessible, yet by no means simple form.
Terroir & Origin
The Palatinate, particularly the Mittelhaardt around Gimmeldingen, offers ideal conditions for Riesling: limestone and bunter sandstone soils, sheltered vineyard sites and a mild, almost Mediterranean climate. Christmann has managed his vineyards biodynamically according to Demeter standards for decades – a pioneering achievement in the region. The „Aus den Lagen“ combines grapes from various parcels and thus provides an authentic cross-section of the estate’s terroir. The 2024 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season with cool nights that favoured the acid structure.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling is the queen of German grape varieties, and Christmann masterfully understands how to bring out its complexity. Vinification takes place spontaneously with natural yeasts, ageing in traditional large wooden casks. The house’s philosophy aims for wines with tension and minerality that allow the terroir to speak, without being overshadowed by wood or technique. The light residual sweetness serves not sweetness itself, but balances the vibrant acidity and gives the wine drinkability and harmony.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A versatile companion to both modern and classical cuisine: excellent with asparagus with hollandaise sauce, pan-fried char or Thai curries with coconut milk. The acid structure makes it an ideal partner for goat’s cheese or flammkuchen. Also on its own, as an aperitif, this Riesling demonstrates its quality and drinkability.
