Wine description for Riesling Eisquell 2023 from Battenfeld-Spanier
General information
The Eisquell 2023 represents the precise signature of Battenfeld-Spanier in the entry-level segment. Originating from the calcareous steep slopes of the Zellertal, this wine is fermented spontaneously and matured in traditional double barrels and steel tanks. With 12.0% alcohol, 7 g/l acidity and just 3 g/l residual sugar, it epitomises the purist, bone-dry style for which the Rhine-Hessian flagship winery is known.
Colour & appearance
In the glass, it presents a clear straw yellow colour with lively emerald green reflections - the visual announcement of its mineral precision.
Nose
The flavour is razor-sharp and of crystalline clarity. Menthol notes and fresh herbal accents (parsley, coriander) open the bouquet, accompanied by a cool mountain breeze. Citrus fruits dominate the fruit spectrum - especially lime zest and bergamot, underpinned by crisp green apples. The pronounced minerality is reminiscent of wet limestone after a summer rain. A subtle hint of ice candy rounds off the flavour profile.
Palate
The Eisquell is uncompromisingly precise and vibrant on the palate. The acidity is striking, but perfectly integrated into the slender structure. The phenolic framework characteristic of Battenfeld-Spanier gives the wine an impressive backbone. The fine phenolic texture supports the cool fruit expression and emphasises the vegetal nuances of Fennel seeds, Pea pods and white pepper in the long, mineral finish. A prime example of modern, terroir-influenced Rheinhessen Riesling.
Food pairing suggestions
The vibrant acid structure and herbal-spicy component predestine this wine for dishes with fresh, aromatic elements. Excellent with Smoked trout with horseradish cream sauce, Sourdough roll with avocado and bacon or exotic combinations such as Papaya and mango salad with chilli chicken.
Special features
The Eisquell 2023 impressively demonstrates how an entry-level wine from a top producer can raise the bar for an entire region. The combination of chalky soils, the cool microclimate of the Zellertal and Hans Oliver Spanier's minimalist cellar technique results in a Riesling of remarkable precision and expressiveness.
